Born in Collazzone (PG) on 23/10/1957, resident in Spello (PG), via Consolare, 57. He is Associate Professor (ING-INF/05) at the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, Perugia University since December 2017.

He graduated cum laude in Chemistry on 29/09/1981.

He got PhD cum laude in Quimica Teorica y Computacional on 22/11/2012 at Barcelona University (Spain).

From May 1982 to April 1986 he was employee of Soc. BIODATA S.p.A. (SERONO Group) a company producing radio-immunological test kits, as New Technologies Manager.

From May 1986 to January 10th, 1988 he got a research contract with the Centro di Calcolo of Perugia University.

From January 11th, 1988 to October 31, 2001 he got the position of Tecnico Laureato at the Centro di Calcolo of Perugia University, and as Scientific Computing Manager since 1990.

From November 1st, 2001 to 30 November 2017 he was Researcher (INF/01) at the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science of Perugia University.

He is Deputy Director of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science of Perugia University since November 2019.

The project was selected in 2004 for the Area Mathematics and Computer Science of Perugia University by the Comitato di Indirizzo per la Valutazione della Ricerca (CIVR) of the Italian Instruction, University and Research Ministry.

  2. He was coordinator (2006-2010) of the project E-science and Learning Approaches in Molecular Sciences of COST Action D37: Grid Computing in Chemistry: GRIDCHEM.

Stages and visits to other universities and research centres

In 1988 he visited for 2 months the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC), Stanford, CA, USA, for implementing the software Distributed Update Control System (DUCS) in the VM/CMS operating system, in collaboration with INFN, Perugia section. In 1993 he visited for a month the Department of Physics of the University of Oklahoma (USA), where he participated in the development of molecular simulation 3D codes.

In 1994 he visited for a month the Department of Physical Chemistry of the University of the Basque Country (Spain). He visited the University of Barcelona (Spain), Department of Chemistry of The University of Crete and the Research Centre Foundation for the Technology Hellas (FORTH), Crete (Greece).

In 1994 he visited for a month the Universidad del Pais Vasco in Vitoria (Spagna), within the project ”Software for Design of Potential Energy Surfaces” in collaboration with Prof. Ernesto Garcia Para. He visited the University of Barcelona (Spain) several times; in 2007 for 2 months The Department of Chemistry of The University of Crete and the Centro Ricerche Foundation for the Technology Hellas (FORTH), Crete (Greece).

Awards

In 2006 the SIMBEX project has been selected by CIVR of Ministero dell'Università as one of the 12 best products of the University of Perugia in the area of Mathematics and Computer Sciencefor the period 2003-2005.

In 2007 he received the Recognition of Service Award for the contribution to ACM as Co-Chair of Web3D 2007.

In 2013 he received the Certificate of Appreciation from IEEE Communication Society “for contributing to the growth of the Communication Industry and the Society as a Loyal Communications Society Member”.

Teaching activities

He is Professor in the Bachelor degree in Computer Science of the University of Perugia, of “Architettura Reti di Computer” (since 1995, first at the Scuola a Fini Speciali in Informatica, the at the Diploma di Informatica, finally at the Corso di Laurea in Informatica) and “Sistemi di Realtà Virtuale” (since 2001).

He is teacher at the Corso di Laurea Magistrale in Informatica of “High performance Computing” (since 2003) and “Human Computer Interaction” (since 2018).

He coordinated 105 Tesi d Laurea in Informatica, 6 Tesi di Laurea Specialistica in Informatica, 9 Tesi di Laurea Magistrale in Informatica.

He was supervisor of the Thesis of “Dottorato di Ricerca in Matematica ed Informatica per il trattamento dell'informazione e della conoscenza” XXV ciclo of Alessandro Costantini.

Appointments

From 1990 to 2001 he was the Manager of Polo GARR of Perugia, planning the management and technical organization of local GARR organizations (University of Perugia, CNR, INFN e University for Foreigners of Perugia) and the development of the network, taking part in meetings at national level to represent the local instances. Since the realization of GARRB, evolution of the previous infrastructure, he was Technical Responsible (APM) of Perugia University until 2001.

In 1998, he designed and built the network infrastructure of the Umbria 2000 project, promoted by the Region of Umbria for the Great Jubilee of 2000 through a collaboration contract with CRUED Servizi Informatici SpA.


He was a member of the Research Commission of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science from 2002 to 2003..

He represented Researchers in the Academic Senate from 2005 to 2006.

He was President of the Open Source Competence Centre (CCOS) of the Umbria Region, established under Regional Law 11/2006 from 2007 to 2013. During his term of office, he issued Calls for Proposals for the Financing to Public Administrations of projects for the diffusion of Free Libre and Open Source technologies (FLOSS) in 2008, 2009 and 2010. 225 projects were submitted, of which 121 were funded for a total of €708,000.
